Cancer Research UK came into
being in February 2002, following the merger of the two foremost
British cancer research
charities -The Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) and The Cancer
Research Campaign (CRC). They are the world's leading
independent organisation dedicated to cancer research. Cancer is the biggest killer in the United Kingdom. There are more than 200 known types of cancer, and statistics show that at least one in three people will develop some form of cancer within their lifetime Today, Cancer Research UK funds the work of 3,000 scientists working in 5 different research areas at centres throughout the UK (working in partnership with local NHS trusts). The organisation is funded entirely through public donations and proceeds from their shops. 30,000 volunteers give up their time to support the charity, and over a million women (including our very own Andrea) have participated in the Race for Life events. Thanks to the work of Cancer Research UK, the survival rate for cancer sufferers is improving all the time. If you would like to contact Cancer Research UK, their details are: Cancer
